THE FEAST OF THE EUCHARISTIC HEART, THE TITULAR FEAST OF THE INSTITUTE OF THE SISTERS OF THE EUCHARISTIC HEART
(Theme of my reflection – “Take my heart, take my all’’)

Rev. Sr. Mary Jane Oiza Ojapah, EHJIntroduction: There is only a minimal difference between devotion to the Eucharistic Heart and the ordinary devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. With loving reverence, the Church worships the symbol of Christ’s love, which inspired him to give us the Eucharist and so remain with us till the end of time. The inventiveness of the Heart of Jesus in giving this proof of his love is rightly considered to be the object of a special devotion. So it was that Leo XIII established the Archconfraternity of the Eucharistic Heart in the church of San Gioacchino, Rome, and Benedict XV approved devotion to the Sacred Heart as the source of the Eucharist. Finally, in the encyclical Haurietis aquas. Pius XII encouraged the devotion in these words: “it will be difficult for us to appreciate fully the love that inspired Christ to give himself to us as the food of our souls, unless we practice a special devotion to the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus (EHJ Booklet for Divine Office & Mass Pg. V).

What do we celebrate precisely in the feast of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus? The Feast of Corpus Christi – celebrates the presence of the Body and Blood of Christ, when the attention of the Universal Church is directed to Jesus who gave himself to us whole and entire in the Sacramental Spices of his Body and Blood in the Eucharist. The Eucharist as we know is the spiritual wealth of the church, the centre of the life of the church and the centre of our lives too. In the Feast of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus.

We celebrate that symbol of Love in his Sacred Heart that made him to give us his body and blood as spiritual food for our souls. The centre of our whole celebration is that Divine Love that made Jesus to give us himself and to remain with us for ever, loving us, caring for us, guiding us and feeding us daily with his own body? What could more powerful and complete like the Love of Jesus for us in the Eucharistic? St. Alphonsus Mary De-Liguori, Says, “He seems to have nothing else to do but to love human beings” to Lord in love with mankind, 33 years he stays on earth seems too short, so he decided to work the greatest miracles, he instituted the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, where he can live with us for all eternity.

Songs of songs 8.6 describe love as strong as death, Jealousy is cruel as the grave. Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death. It is love that fuel the passion with which one does things, without love everything will be sterile and lacking vitality and zest. The depth of Jesus love for us is what Jesus has shown in the Holy Eucharist, “Matt 20: 28 says “Be like the son of Man who has come not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. He says in John `15:13,” There is no greater love than this, that one gives his life for one’s friends, and you are my friends if you do what I command you. And what did he command us? “Love one another as I have loved you’’ – John 15:12. So, the feast we celebrate is about love, loving God with all our Hearts and loving one another sincerely and truthfully. St. Theresa of Calcutta, MC would say, Love until it hurts. Real Love is always painful and hurts: then it is pure. St. Paul also described the qualities of Love for us in 1 Cor 3: -4-7). “Love is patient and kind; it is not jealous or conceited or proud; Love is not ill mannered or selfish or irritable. Love does not keep a record of wrongs, love is not happy with evil, but it is happy with the truth. Love never gives up, and its faith, hope and patience never fails”.
