Archbishop John Kwao Amuzu Aggey
Served from: July 6, 1965 to March 13, 1972
Born: March 5, 1908
Archbishop John Kwao Amuzu Aggey – Successor of Archbishop L. H. Taylor, SMA.
On August 15, 1965, Bishop Aggey had a private enthronement in Holy Cross Cathedral. Following the death of our Founder Archbishop Leo Hale Taylor, SMA on October 27, 1965, Archbishop John Aggey succeeded him from 1965 to 1971.
He was a Ghanaian and was very much instrumental to the quick autonomy of the EHJ Sisters from the OLA Sisters following the death of Leo Hale Taylor. He was the backbone of the Sisters in ensuring their independence from the leadership of the OLA Sisters who were still at the helm of affairs of the young Institute. He influenced the first General Chapter that brought in the first black African Superior General of the Institute on October 29, 1966.
He equally saw to the initial physical growth of the Institute, some communities were opened and Sisters were assigned and given apostolates.
Archbishop Aggey died in 1972 and was succeeded by Archbishop Anthony Olubunmi Okogie who is now a cardinal.
